With the launch of North Dakota’s new tourism campaign earlier this week, came distinct attention around one ad. The ad, which depicted a girls-night out on the town, caused a bit of a social media stir yesterday when it became widely shared and commented on.
We support North Dakota Tourism’s efforts to promote our state’s nightlife and fun atmosphere and think their response is worth reading: http://legendarynd.wordpress.com/
Sometimes even the best, well-intentionedĀ things can be misinterpreted. It is the beauty of us all having our own opinion. As an Ambassador of North Dakota, whether you like the ad or not, I know we can all agree that North Dakota is still a fun place to have an evening out.

This proud ND ambassador thought it was inept at best, sleazy at worst. Really…come to North Dakota and drink? Can’t get THAT anywhere else. And by putting those words together with that photo, I don’t know how anyone could derive anything other than the “Jersey Shore” implication. What other sort of “legend” are the young booze hounds supposed to become with that photo as a starting point?
I turn blue in the face telling people I meet (especially the teen/young adult ones) that North Dakota has so much more to offer than drinking. Hearing someone say “there’s nothing to do here” really gets me going. With that in mind, the aforementioned ad really seems to be sending the wrong message, no matter what other conclusions one may draw.

As a life long North Dakotan, I can agree that there are lots of things to do here, and the night life is good. I think North Dakota has been a best kept secret, and can’t imagine living anywhere else.
I have to say that I am glad they flew this ad “up the pole” to get a temperature reading on it before it was actually used in print media, and I am even more happy that they listened to what the people said and pulled the ad. We have so much more to offer than what’s depicted in this picture.
I worked for North Dakota tourism in the summers of 88 & 89, and am happy to see that our tourism department is hard at work. I’ve enjoyed reading your blog and am looking forward to future posts!
